EFA Doctoral Tutorial
Alongside the EFA Annual Meeting, a one-day EFA Doctoral Tutorial (EFA-DT) is organized. This is an intensive and competitive session designed for PhD students in Finance who are nearing the end of their doctoral thesis and will soon be on the job market. To be eligible, the student must apply in advance by duly submitting a single-authored paper and supporting documents (as per the relevant guidelines and deadlines posted). The current EFA-DT format allows up to eight PhD student papers to be selected for presentation and discussion at this yearly EFA doctoral event. The well-established EFA-DT is held in parallel with the recently launched EFA Doctoral Workshop (EFA-DW) on the same day the EFA Annual Meeting officially starts, preceded the evening before by a networking welcome dinner.
The reputation of the EFA-DT as an event of excellence in its own right firmly establishes it among the 3 main pillars of EFA's success: | the EFA Annual Meeting || the Review of Finance (EFA's own journal) || the EFA Doctoral Tutorial |
Date: Wednesday, August 21, 2019 (welcome dinner on August 20, 2019)
Location: Nova SBE (new campus), Carcavelos (Lisbon), Portugal

Program & Call
The 2019 EFA Doctoral Tutorial is scheduled for Wednesday, August 21, 2019. This full-day session provides selected students with an excellent opportunity to present their papers and receive constructive feedback from faculty discussants in their fields. Interested PhD students are invited to submit their contributions by the March 15th deadline. Preference is given to work that is substantially advanced but not fully completed. The organizers of the EFA-DT consider only single-authored work by current PhD students who have not yet been on the job market but are planning to join the job market in 2019/2020 or later. (Co-authored papers are desk-rejected.) The 2019 Doctoral Tutorial is to take place at Nova SBE in Carcavelos, preceding the opening of the 46th EFA Annual Meeting.
Submission & Guidelines
Submission for the 2019 EFA-DT opens February 15, 2019, and closes March 15, 2019, at 13:00 CET (Central European Time). Student papers and supporting documents can only be submitted during this one-month period. For detailed information, please check the EFA-DT Info & Guidelines.

- Paper (anonymous)
- Official letter (e.g., on institutional letterhead and/or signed & sealed) from the home university stating the student’s status (note that a reference letter is not needed)
Submission link: www.conftool.com/phd-efa2019 (to be activated) | Submission deadline: March 15, 2019 (13:00 CET)
Decision notifications will be delivered by mid-May 2019 to confirm which student papers have been selected for presentation at the 2019 EFA Doctoral Tutorial in Finance.
EFA Doctoral Tutorial Best Paper Prize
The best paper presented at the 2019 EFA-DT will be recognized with the Best EFA Doctoral Tutorial Paper Prize sponsored jointly by Nasdaq Educational Foundation (Nasdaq) and Chicago Quantitative Alliance (CQA). The award for the Best EFA Doctoral Tutorial Paper will be presented to the winner during the EFA 2019 Carcavelos conference. The 2019 EFA-DT award consists of a money prize sponsored by Nasdaq (€1,500 EUR), and the winner will also be invited to participate in the CQA Fall Conference held in Chicago, USA, September 11-12, 2019, to present his/her work.*
Authors of papers presented at the 2019 EFA-DT receive a stipend of €1,000 EUR to help cover travel costs, registration to the EFA Annual Meeting, and EFA membership for the calendar year. (NOTE: Students whose papers are accepted for the EFA-DT are also expected to register for and participate in the EFA Annual Meeting.)
EFA Annual Meeting
As part of the 2019 EFA Doctoral Tutorial program, accepted students are expected to participate in the 46th EFA Annual Meeting, and to apply for EFA membership for the year as well as register for EFA 2019 Carcavelos. Moreover, on the (Tuesday) evening before the EFA-DT is held, there will be a complimentary welcome dinner for participants to which students, faculty, and sponsors, are invited and can hopefully attend.
The EFA Doctoral Tutorial is a closed session (by invitation only). Interested observers must obtain permission in advance from the organizers in order to be admitted to this EFA pre-conference event.
If you have any inquiries or encounter difficulties with the 2019 EFA-DT submission & application process, please send an e-mail to the EFA Doctoral Events Coordinator, Marion Hebbelynck (firstname.lastname@example.org).
*NOTE: Accepted students must fully disclose whether their September schedule allows for travel to Chicago to participate in the CQA Fall Conference if they win the EFA-DT best paper prize, and give advance notice if they may be unable to fulfill this potential prize commitment (which in no way diminishes their chances of winning the best paper prize yet enables the DT organizers to make alternate arrangements).
Chairs & Faculty
The current EFA-DT co-chairs are:
- Esther Eiling (University of Amsterdam)
- Gyöngyi Lóránth (University of Vienna)
- Kristian Miltersen (Copenhagen Business School)
- Frans de Roon (Tilburg University)
EFA gratefully acknowledges the invaluable contributions of those notable faculty participants selected as subject-specialists for the EFA Doctoral Tutorial in Finance, who alongside the EFA-DT co-chairs selflessly volunteer their time and energy to share their professional expertise with up-and-coming PhD students by actively participating in this important EFA educational initiative – thereby helping to shape the future of the greater field of Finance.
Sponsors & Support
Throughout the past decade, the EFA Doctoral Tutorial has been sponsored by the Nasdaq Educational Foundation (Nasdaq) and the Chicago Quantitative Alliance (CQA) – each contributing separate prizes for the best EFA-DT paper that are presented to the winning author in person at the EFA conference awards ceremony. Along with the logistical support of the local organizers of the EFA Annual Meeting, and the administrative support of the EFA Secretariat at the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM), these two longstanding sponsors have contributed to the success of the EFA Doctoral Tutorial. The ongoing financial support of Nasdaq has enabled a group welcome dinner to be organized for many years, thereby enhancing the social & networking aspects of the EFA doctoral events.
